Peace Fleece - not your ordinary fiber company

Here is their story:

Peace Fleece started in a barn on a sheep and horse farm in the small, rural town of Porter in the foothills of southwestern Maine. Peter Hagerty and his wife Marty Tracy started buying wool from the Soviet Union back in 1985 in hopes that through trade they could help diffuse the threat of nuclear war.

For years Peter traveled through eastern Europe, central Asia and the Middle East in search of farmers and shepherds who are willing to set aside historic enmities in exchange for opportunities leading to mutual understanding and economic interdependence.

Marty believed that promoting crafts in our hectic society is important. By inspiring people to work with their hands, she hoped that they can find more time to discover their own inner solutions for peace.

In an attempt to decrease their carbon footprint, Peace Fleece changed their blend so that 90% of the wool and mohair comes from the United States, including the Blue Gap Ranchers on the Black Mesa, Navajo Nation near Chinle, AZ only a few hours from Moab, UT.

Peter and Marty recently retired. Peace Fleece is now distributed by Harrisville Designs, a New Hampshire mill, dedicated to maintaining the Peace Fleece sourcing and legacy.

We love this yarn because of the beautiful colors and the fact that it can take some abuse. It is perfect for mittens and sweaters.

Worsted weight - 200 yds - reeled skein

This is yarn is made with 75% Navajo Rambouillet and Domestic Fine wool, and 25% Mohair for strength. The mohair will give your finished piece a nice halo. Please note: Dyelots may vary in color, if you're trying to match skeins, please let us know. Handwash in lukewarm water and lay flat to dry. Peace Fleece softens and fluffs with continued washings.
